 Core Functions: 

• Maintain optimal communication with administration, faculty, students, and community partners regarding university and program initiatives.
• Participate in program curriculum and course design, assessment, and evaluation.
• Participate in student admission, progression, and advisement activities.
• Prepare class materials using best practices in optometric education.
• Provide direct student instruction online and on-site in clinical settings.
• Initiate, adopt, evaluate, and advance the program’s mission, goals, and outcomes of the College of Optometry and the University.
• Provide opportunities for students and peers to evaluate teaching effectiveness.
• Evaluate and recommend faculty members for promotion.
• Participate in all department meetings and other University events. Serve on program, University, state, and national committees appropriate to their rank and experience.
• Participate in professional and community activities to bring education, service, and research together to improve health care delivery.
• Accept opportunities for membership on standing and ad-hoc committees of the program and University as elected or appointed.

 Background/Expertise: 

• A doctorate in optometry and residency/fellowship OR three (3) years of full-time clinical experience in substitution of residency/fellowship is required.
• Must be eligible to obtain licensure in the state of Utah.
• Have an interest in teaching one of the curriculum areas: optics, ocular disease, systemic disease, neuro-optometry, glaucoma, pediatrics, and binocular vision.
• Active in local, state, and/or national optometric organizations (preferred).
• Prior experience in teaching at a College of Optometry (preferred)
• Demonstrate knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting contemporary optometric education.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Salary range: The current salary for this position ranges from $80,800 (Assistant Professor academic year 9-month appointment) to $270,000 (Full Professor fiscal year 11-month appointment). However, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank.

Our goal is to recruit an outstanding colleague with strong interests in ocular disease, ocular biology, and therapeutics, or a related research area relevant to the eye or vision.

The Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry and Vision Science has several clinical facilities that serve a large diverse patient population, a clinical research center, and many laboratories in the Vision Science graduate program conducting research in optics, ocular biology, ocular disease, translational and clinical research, molecular and cell biology, microbiology and infectious disease, perception, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and computational vision.

The successful candidate will also have opportunities to be considered for membership in other programs across the UC Berkeley campus, including the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute, Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, the Center for Emerging and Neglected Diseases, and the Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics. Current faculty also enjoy collaborations with the UC Berkeley Departments of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Computer Science, Molecular and Cell Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Infectious Disease and multiple divisions within the School of Public Health, as well as the UC San Francisco Department of Ophthalmology.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications(required at time of application)Candidates must have an OD, MD, DO, PharmD, DVM or equivalent clinical degree from an accredited institution (or equivalent international degree) and/or a PhD (or equivalent international degree).

Preferred qualificationsPreference will be given to candidates with both research and clinical training. The successful applicant will demonstrate potential for exceptional basic, clinical, and/or translational research achievements as well as excellence in teaching in both the professional (Doctor of Optometry) and graduate (PhD program in Vision Science) curricula. Applicants should also have the potential to establish strong collaborations at the local, national, and global levels.

Responsibilities:

• Be able to pull vision insurance
• Assist patients in selecting and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses based on their prescription and individual needs
• Take accurate measurements of patients' eyes and facial features to ensure proper fit and comfort of eyewear
• Educate patients on proper eyewear care and maintenance
• Adjust and repair eyeglasses as needed
• Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining patient records and scheduling appointments
• Collaborate with optometrists and ophthalmologists to provide comprehensive eye care services

Experience:

• Previous experience as an optician or in a similar role preferred
• Knowledge of senior care and pediatric eye care practices

• Proficiency in medical coding
• Experience working in a laboratory setting is a plus
