Responsibilities:

A successful candidate must be passionate and experienced in classroom and clinical instruction. This position will require participation in the KYCO clinics, providing patient care with both student interns and optometric residents.

Qualifications:

This vacancy will require a minimum Doctor of Optometry Degree (O.D.). Residency training in the appropriate areas of specialty or a minimum of three years of relevant clinical experience is preferred. Optometrist applicants must be eligible for licensure in the state of Kentucky with expanded therapeutics certification and are expected to participate in patient care services. Prior college teaching experience is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Be highly knowledgeable in the field of Anterior Segment Disease and Contact Lenses.
  • Develop and teach courses and/or laboratories in the area of anterior segment disease and contact lenses.
  • Provide direct patient care and clinical instruction to professional students and interdisciplinary practice with other educational professionals.

Primary duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and delivering lectures and/or laboratories for anterior segment disease and contact lenses and related areas, as assigned; embracing and enhancing the didactic philosophies in the O.D. program; maintaining and expanding the high-quality clinical practice environment for optometry students on rotation; precepting students on clinical rotation at The Kentucky College of Optometry clinics.
  • Helping to maintain and grow the state-of-the-art optometry program with a strong interdisciplinary focus that meets the needs of patients in the surrounding community; working closely together with all faculty to provide a complete range of eye and vision care services; participating in leadership roles in state, regional, and national optometry organizations; participating on College and University committees, as assigned; participating in College and University service activities.
  • Engaging in research and scholarly activity, including presentations at scientific meetings, research, and publication in peer-reviewed journals sufficient to qualify for academic advancement.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Develops clinical sites that support the educational needs of students. The Associate Dean for Clinics (ADC) is responsible for directing, operating, and creating the clinical program at the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). The ADC ensures that the central educational training facility and the remote clinical sites are operating within current practice and business standards. The Associate Dean for Clinics advises the Dean on all aspects of the optometry clinical network and care delivery system. The ADC shall supervise the optometric staff and ensure that the basic goals and objectives of the vision and visual health care program, as required by the funding agencies (University, Federal, State, and Local), as well as licensing and certificates and regulatory requirements, are maintained, and high-quality standards of clinical care are achieved. The ADC will stay abreast of emerging trends in health care and all legislation impacting the profession of optometry.

Responsibilities:

Administration:

  • Serves the Administrative Team Administration.
  • Participate in budget planning for all clinics.
  • Advise in the purchase and maintenance of equipment.
  • Advise in the development of new clinical programs.
  • Participate in personnel matters related to clinical and ancillary staff: determining the staff plan and recruitment. and hiring, disciplinary actions and terminations, incentive system, and motivation efforts.
  • Keep the Administrative Team informed of legal issues and legal trends in health and vision care malpractice and malpractice prevention (risk management).
  • Maintains an active QA program.
  • Supervise the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Curriculum.

Faculty Support:

  • Development of current practice/clinical protocols for all clinical faculty.
  • Partner with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Curriculum to ensure that our clinics are meeting the educational goals of the college.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of associated health professions, Ophthalmology, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Neurology.

Personnel policies and procedures.

  • Development of clinical leadership at all clinical training sites.
  • Initiate concepts of quality assurance with the committees of quality assurance at the training site.
  • Keep current with emerging trends in health and vision care – economic and professional.
  • Responsible for educational facilities development and maintenance.
  • Arrange and conduct regular meetings of professional staff to communicate educational and program policies and concerns.
  • Meet regularly with the Dean to present the clinical staff’s ideas and concerns.

Student Support:

The University of Pikeville seeks an experienced, visionary leader to serve as its Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Curriculum (ADCEC) in the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). The Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Curriculum (ADCEC) is responsible for developing and refining the clinical educational experiences for students of the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). The ADCEC ensures that KYCO clinics and all remote clinical sites are providing the appropriate educational experiences required of the students of KYCO. The Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and Curriculum advises the Deans on all improvements and enhancements of the clinical education at KYCO. The ADCEC ensures that clinical rubrics are maintained, updated, scheduled, and completed appropriately for all clinical experiences. The ADCEC shall look for innovative ways to add to the students’ clinical experiences through adjustments to the curriculum or other opportunities. The ADECE will remain focused on ensuring that all KYCO clinics operate within the guidelines of all accrediting and funding agencies (University, Federal, State, and Local). The ADCEC supervises the Director of Externship Program and is the responsible party for interactions between the College and all external clinical training sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Approve curricular adjustments for students throughout their training.
  • Arrange and conduct meetings with students at key points during their clinical education at KYCO.
  • Review and revise clinical expectations for clinical faculty and students annually.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Innovation and Assessment (ADAIA) plays a key leadership role in advancing academic excellence at the Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO). This position is responsible for enhancing the didactic curriculum, guiding assessment strategies, and fostering instructional innovation to improve student learning and performance, particularly on NBEO board examinations. The ADAIA works closely with the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), Dean of Students, and faculty to support strategic academic initiatives and data-informed curricular development.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the continuous improvement of the didactic curriculum with a focus on alignment to program competencies and NBEO success.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of effective formative and summative assessments across the curriculum.
  • Supervise the Assessment Coordinator and ensure consistency and rigor in evaluating student learning and course effectiveness.
  • Promote mastery-based learning and evidence-based instructional design.

Faculty Support and Development:

  • Serve as a key resource to faculty in curriculum design, assessment practices, and instructional strategies.
  • Facilitate workshops and peer collaboration focused on improving teaching effectiveness and assessment literacy.
  • Ensure consistency in syllabus design, course structure, and rubric development in alignment with academic standards.
